Facebook: It allows us to solicit advice on what to do when there's a random duck in your yard. Or share videos that intrigue/disgust/inspire. Or simply reach out to send a friend from high school birthday wishes.
While Facebook is criticized as a time suck, there is another side to this coin. It's a space we create community that stretched around the world. It gives us an opportunity to celebrate life...and those who make our lives richer.
More than two years ago, my dear friend Rodney died unexpectedly. Every so often when I'm missing him, I visit his Facebook page. I find comfort and community there.
I'm not the only one who misses him (this man lived every moment to the fullest and often ended conversations with "love you," in a meaningful and genuine tone). He's given us a place to come when we feel sad, alone, kind, nostalgic or simply want to remember. It's just one way we can use social media to build community.
How do you use social media to create community? And celebrate life?
